Essentially, the New Bauhaus Lighthouse Demonstrators are large-scale, high-impact projects that serve as pilot examples of how to introduce the movement’s values into real-world contexts. They are developed in different countries and address environmental, social, and cultural challenges through innovative and transdisciplinary approaches.
Based in Madrid, the Bauhaus of the Seas Sails initiative, promoted by the international foundation TB21 Thyssen-Bornemisza Art Contemporary, works to ensure ecological transition and improve quality of life in coastal areas, where 41% of the European population resides. The goals of this movement, with which the Thyssen-Bornemisza National Museum collaborates, are clear and strongly rooted in Beauty, Inclusion, and Sustainability:
- Reconnecting inhabitants with their habitats, fostering ties with the material, aesthetic, ecological, and cultural heritage that define coastal identities. This reconnection involves not only recognizing the historical and symbolic value of the environment, but also developing new practices that promote environmental regeneration and care for the land.
- Reconciling human beings with the sea, understood not only as a physical space, but as a living reality with which European societies maintain deep interdependencies. From this perspective, the aim is to inspire new forms of coexistence, management, and sustainable use of marine resources, integrating science, creativity, and local knowledge.
One of the most important aspects of the project is the extensive documentation process carried out to record and analyze its progress. This process incorporates the voices of experts, academics, researchers, cultural agents, and political figures, which has made it possible to build a diverse and open archive on the challenges and opportunities of coastal regeneration. The format chosen to disseminate this knowledge has been the production of a series of informative videos, available for free on the Canal 180 YouTube channel.
These audiovisual materials not only offer an in-depth look at the initiative’s work, but also facilitate its understanding and transfer to other European contexts interested in applying similar models. Thus, Bauhaus of the Seas Sails constitutes a valuable reference for future initiatives that aspire to integrate art, science, and citizenship into the sustainable regeneration of urban and natural spaces.
