GREEN AXES AND SQUARES OF BCN’S EIXAMPLE.
Since 2021, it has planned and carried out a comprehensive transformation of the built environment of the iconic Eixample neighbourhood, also known as Barcelona’s Ensanche. It prioritised green spaces and squares as neighbourhood meeting places, which has led to a substantial reduction in pollution and, since then, has fostered community life.
The focus is on “the city of the future”, where vehicle traffic is reduced and streets are beautified with vegetation, which essentially means combating climate change and promoting social cohesion. The structural result of all these transformations is the creation of “Superblocks” or Superilles, a model that, on the one hand, allows for the reorganisation of mobility and the removal of through traffic from the streets and, on the other hand, defines a new type of street, known as the “green axis”.
