Xare (sare is net in Basque) is one of the oldest “pelota vasca” games. It is practiced with a kind of racket, “pala”, traditionally made with a thick ring of wicker or curved wood and weaving a cotton net loosely on its surface.
As a tribute to fronton sports, especially xare, which is at risk of disappearing, and inspired by local tradition and crafts, we design Xare, a set of luminous objects made up of three “palas” of different shapes and sizes.
We chose wood and wicker as the main materials, this being our link with the traditional production of the racket, while the way of manufacturing, in this case, by handcrafts as well as digital fabrication tools, speaks of a new way of craft that, as in traditional workshops, it is committed to local and sustainable production.
