Sustainable Places (SP2023).

The 11th annual edition of Sustainable Places (SP2023) took place, in a mixed face-to-face and virtual format, at the Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura of the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid, from June 14 to 16, 2023.

The edition has been developed within the framework of the New European Bauhaus, which connects the European Green Pact with the co-creation of a quality, sustainable and inclusive built environment. The event was attended by more than 200 participants from some 16 countries, involved in the university, business and public administration sectors. Sustainable Places showcased results of the EU’s Horizon 2020 and Horizon Europe Framework Program through the participation of leading research and innovation projects.

At the opening of the event, the director of ETSAM, Manuel Blanco, recalled that sustainability goals and climate change objectives cannot be achieved without addressing the quality of the built environment at the building, city and landscape scale, including our infrastructures for supplying goods, water and energy.

SP2023 kicked off with the matchmaking session entitled “New European Bauhaus (NEB) & Built4People (B4P)”. The session presented the framework of action of the B4P Stakeholder Community, the European Construction, built environment and energy efficient building Technology Platform (ECTP) and the World Green Building Council (WorldGBC) in relation to the NEB initiative of the European Commission, including an examination of different calls for funding with European funds. Also, the ETSAM management showed the results and future milestones of the strategic agreement with the DGAUA for the implementation of the NEB. Finally, professors Ester Higueras and Belén Moneo reported on the collaboration protocol with the DGAUA for the implementation of the objectives of the Spanish Urban Agenda at the ETSAM.

Over the three-day duration, the SP2023 program has included keynote sessions, technical sessions and workshops for research dissemination, clustering of EU projects and networking among stakeholders of all kinds.
